Green Politics
http://www.studentcircle.co.uk/student/special-offer.php

'Zero waste Britain' with 'sustainable energy, water and waste management' is the new coalition government's scheme for tackling the current environmental challenges in the UK. However with a struggling economy, job market and other major problems to sort out, are green politics and policies put aside for more 'immediate' problems?

We can see the effects of a distressed and declining environment all around us, weather has become increasingly more volatile with heat waves, storms and stronger hurricanes. Scientists have monitored severe rises in the ocean levels and temperature due to melting ice glaciers and that the carbon dioxide concentrations in our atmosphere is the highest in 150,000 years, along with other harmful gases it traps heat in our atmosphere creating the greenhouse effect warming our planet.
The comparison of pictures of Greenland, the Artic and other once ice covered areas from the 1950's to today makes the changes in environment become even more obvious.

David Cameron's party line of 'vote blue and go green' message struck a cord with environmentalists everywhere, forming the Conservative environment network aiming to take on the international and local environmental problems, with market driven solutions. "It's certainly an encouraging sign to have a government that seems to be committed to tackling a problem that has been long overdue a serious and innovative solution." Thomas Mears a political student and Conservative supporter commented, "but change doesn't happen overnight, there are other serious problems that the new government has inherited that are also crying out for solutions, I don't truly believe that there is any softening of green politics on the part of the new coalition government. Combined the Liberal Democrats and the Conservatives have over twenty commitments to the environment, which is more than they have for any other area."

'Low carbon economy' with more severe restrictions on fossil fuel usage, coal powered stations and encouragement towards electric cars and public transport with renewable energy is on the agenda. Liberal Democrats Chris Huhne, appointed energy and climate change secretary has already made some leaps in green policy, by scrapping the third runway planned for Heathrow and committing to no new runways being built at Gatwick or Stansted airport.
Thomas commented, "this really seems like a positive start to making good on environmental policies, I expect in time we will see other breakthroughs for the environmentalists, they just need time and an understanding of the multiple problems needing to be dealt with."
